Books i have narrated for other authors
When I tell friends that I narrate audiobooks, they often think that it sounds like fun and that they would like to get into doing it. I tell them to conduct this simple exercise to see if they really want to become a narrator. Grab a book and go sit in a closet to simulate the confines of an audio recording booth. Then start reading that book aloud. Don’t worry about recording and microphones and such. Just read the book out loud. Create different vocal elements for each of the characters in that book. Maintain your energy levels. Don’t make any mistakes or stumbles as you read. Keep your focus on telling the story before you, and the characters you have created. Now, retain that same level of performance for three hours. Take a break, and then go back in for three more hours. If, after six hours of practice narrating, you can honestly say that it was fun, then you are ready to become a narrator. For most people, just the thought of that exercise conjures up visions of solitary confinement, and they drop the idea of becoming an audio book narrator like a hot rock.
That exercise is indeed a good simulation of the process. But what it doesn’t take into account is that as I sit in that dark little space, I am creating theatre of the mind for the listeners of my audio book by breathing life into words on a page! It is hard, uncomfortable, tedious, and lonely work in the moment. But the end result is, for me, worth it.
